In our latest photography lesson we were free to experiment with whatever look we wanted to. As a group we decided to try gel lighting out again and I was un-sure whether I wanted to use this technique or not. We wanted the overall look to be dark with and different areas of colours bursting out. We decided to work with a pink background and use two lights in front with red and blue gels. We turned the lights off in the studio to make it overall a little bit darker.
Equipment:
- Camera 550d
- stands and lights
- sync lead
- tether lead
- light meter
- red and blue gels
- gel holder
- Hot shoe adapter
After putting layers of blue and red gels on the clips in front of the light we got achieved this beautiful colour with a mixture of a berry colour which was the red and pink mixed with the blue and then this purple/blue colour which was the two gels mixing together to create this beautiful colour.
We tested it out and this is how the colours came out on the model and the background. The background colour was beautiful and was nice deep colour which is what we wanted. Depending on what angle you are facing is how strong the light is on the face. In the photo above you can tell the red light is hitting the right hand side on her face more and on the left its a little lighter.
This image above you can definitly see the red is coming from the right hand side in front and the blue on the left in front of the models but the blue isn't as strong. The lights are place in front of the models.
In the top image you can see quite a bit of shadowing and because iv'e turned my head right round the other side of my face is shadowed completely because the light isn't facing that direction to hit that side. The bottom image my face is quite shadowed because the only light touching me is the red one and the rest of me is shadowed because of the position George is in as the left side of his face is lit up.
This photo is quite bright and the right side again is lit up with the red, the skin looks really good in this photos as it looks bright with the tint of red.
When facing the right direction both models can be lit at once unless you add another light to get all angles of the model. I really like this photo as both of us are lit and the colours are just beautiful and are bouncing off the face.

Overall I think unless I used a lighter colour it's not really something Chanel would use or do in one of there shoots. If anything it could possibly be used in an editorial shoot where they are using the colours to reflect however after the experiment I really do like the effect however feel its not suited to what I'm going for.
