Hair Technical File- Classic shapes and silhouettes

Classic shapes and silhouettes is what we were creating in our most recent hair lesson. The first hair style was a mid pony tail that is super sleek back and created really neat. When creating the ponytail you can add a quiff to the top of it or leave it flat and slick. The next style was creating a neat french twist at the pack of the hair with a small beehive at the top; again kept neat. Lottie firstly showed us a demonstration of how to create both styles and then allowed us to work on our Kate heads to create the styles ourselves.

Equipment/Products:

  • Hair bungee
  • paddle brush
  • pin tail comb
  • hairspray
  • clips
  • mousse
  • grips
  • Straighteners

  1. The first style to be created was a sleek mid ponytail. I firstly used the mousse and ran it through the hair so it's easier to style. The second step was to part the top half away from the bottom half , I used my pin tail comb to part both sides of the hair equal and then joining to the back however dropping it down sightly creating a V and the ponytail will sit just below it.
  2. The top part that is parted away I used a large clip to keep it away from the bottom while I used my comb to sleek the bottom half and put it in a tight ponytail.
  3. I then un clipped the top part and used my comb to start back combing sections to give the top some volume. Once it was backcombed I used my comb to gently brush over the top to make sure the backcomb is also sleek. I then hair sprayed it to make sure it holds in position.
  4. Finally I took the top section and used my comb to incorporate the top half to the bottom and making it blend. Once it was neat enough I grabbed the hair with the rest of the pony tail at the back and used a bungee tie which basically looks like a hair band with two bobby pins on either side. You then pin one side into the hair when the hair band will be and you then wrap the bungee tie around the hair as tight as you can then grip the other side into the hair to hold it into place. This keeps the hair neat without a normal hair tie bunching the hair up and making it look un neat.
  5. Finally I used my comb to neaten any sections out, I then took a section of the ponytail and wrapped it round the hair creating a hair tie so you cant see the bungee tie. I then heated up my straighteners and straightened the ponytail and finally hair sprayed the style.

  1. The next style was a french twist, I took out the previous style and adapted the shape into creating the french twist.
  2. I took the top section of the hair (the same as before) and added some extra backcomb to make a bit of a beehive at the top. I then used bobby pins at the back to twist the beehive and grip it in the center at the top of the head. I then used my comb to neaten it out.
  3. After the top part was done I started on the right side where I used my comb to sleek down the side and hairspray into place. I then gripped it flat in the center.
  4.  I then started on the left side where I brought all the hair over into the center and twist the whole section in on itself and starting gripping it into place neatly along the whole twist.
  5. I then used my comb to brush along the twist and making sure it blends with the top half. I then hair sprayed the whole style to keep it in place.

Final Evaluation

I never knew the trick in creating the perfect slick pony tail however now I do. I think the technique creating the ponytail is really clever and the  bungee tie works really well with creating a sleek look as hair ties tend to bunch up the hair however with wrapping the bungee round the hair you don't have the problem with this. I also think parting the hair from the top ables you to keep control of the hair and also keep the bottom half tied neatly while if you want a small beehive then being able to back comb the top and just joining it into the rest. When putting the bottom half in a ponytail I accidentally placed the ponytail a little too high so when joining the top it didn't meet perfect as mine was a little too high however I used my comb to hid the join make it sleek. Apart from that I think the shape went very well and came out very neat and I'm really pleased with my ponytail as it can be hard creating a sleek look. I love creating french twists as they look amazing and so sophisticated and can have a beehive on top making it look a little 60s. I have created a french twist before and the hardest part is getting the twist neat and not lumpy as when it comes out perfectly sleek it looks amazing. The beehive already had shape from the previous style so I just added more volume and gripped it in a way to create the height. My comb is always useful as you can always brush it out and comb over it to make it look neater. I think I'm definitely getting the hand more of creating a french twist as previously I found it hard to create a neat twist however after practice its becoming better the more I create it.

Vionnet Sleek High Ponytail

High ponytails were all the rage at the Vionnet runway show, pulled back in a sleek straight design, while the face was left bare for the most part; simply a breath of fresh air.

Oscar de la Renta Sleek Ponytail

Stunning and sleek, the beautiful professional styles are pulled back in a mid-height ponytail with the elastic bands hidden under a strand of the lovely mane wrapped tightly around the base. This is a sexy style that looks amazing with drop earrings and brings out the features of the woman wearing it.
