In our recent hair lesson Lottie was demonstrating to us how to create Natural beach hair. After images were shown of natural beach hair we were shown a demosnstration of how to create the look. We firstly had to wash the hair or use the sprayer to wet the hair down however Lottie sprayed the hair down to save time, it was then using mousse, sea salt and hairspray for the products and also using a hairdryer and diffuser to create the natural waves. Finally was putting the waves up into a loose chignon.
Products & Equipment:
- First step was taking my model over to the sink basin with a towel round her shoulders and washed her hair with warm water and shampoo and conditioner.
- I then wrapped the towel round her head and took her to the station where I towel dried her hair. I used a comb to brush through the hair to get any knots out. I then used the hairdryer on its own to power dry the hair so its not dripping wet. Once it was partly dry but still wet I used the mousse and worked it through the hair.
- Next I sprayed the hair with sea salt and brushed it through with my fingers. I then put the diffuser on the end of the hairdryer and starting scrunching up the hair into the diffuser section by section until the hair was dry all over and beach waved by the diffuser.
- Above are the photos of the finished look after using the diffuser and styling it with my finger and parting her hair.
- To make the hair even more wavy or with a few more curls in the hair you can heat up some curling tongs and place a few curls in the hair. I decided I did want a few more curls in the hair so I plugged in the curls and starting with winding the hair up the tong while leaving the end bit so it looks more natural. I took large sections and didn't hold it in the curlers for too long as I didn't want a tight curl. I then unraveled the hair round the wand and moved onto the other sections.
- Once the hair had a bit more of a wave through it I separated the curls with my fingers and styled it into place and finally put hairspray through the hair to hold it in place.
- Another technique to try out was grab a large ish section of hair and twist it round in your hands till the end of the hair.
- Make sure the straighteners were pre-heated and using the straighteners press the twist in the straighteners and do this all the way up and down the twist until its warm and then let go and when the hair unravels it has the waves of the twist.
- Finally the last hairstyle we did was a loose chignon. I put the hair up in a mid/low ponytail and making sure the hair isn't completely scraped back as I don't want a tight hairstyle as its a loose look.
- Once the hair was in a pony tail I twisted the hair up on itself and started gripping it into place in different areas under the chignon to make sure it was nice and secure.
- If you want to finish the look off you could add some hair accessories such as flowers.
Final Evaluation
Overall I feel the technique learnt in this technical lesson is very useful and shows multiple ways of creating beach hair weather its scrunching it up in the diffuser all over, curling the hair loosely in large sections or twisting the hair and using the straighteners over the top. I personally liked washing the hair, applying the products and using a diffuser then adding a few curls in myself if needed to be just to give it more body and waves. I think the twisting technique does work however when using the straighteners over the twist it flattens the natural body we give to the hair so when its done it is wavy however doesn't have a much volume its slightly flatter. The chignon worked well however possibly some loose curls would add to the style and then and accessory in the hair would work well. I really enjoyed creating theses styles and learning when to apply the mousse and what sea salt spray can be used for and again using a diffuser on a hairdryer as people tend not to use them as much these days however this is the second time I have used one and it came out well.
Health and Safety:
- keep work station tidy
- do not run in the studio
- keep bags and coats away in case of a hazard
- be careful of trailing cables
- be careful around hot equipment and turn them off straight after use
