Hair Technical File- Masterclass Avant-Garde Hair: Finger Waves

Wet and Dry Finger Waves

In our recent hair technical lesson we were shown how to create wet finger waves in two types of directions and also dry finger waves with hot tongs. After a demonstration from Lottie of the three styles we need to create for the finger waves we got out our Kate head and tried it ourselves.

Equipment:

  • Paddle brush
  • pin tail comb
  • metal clips
  • hair spray
  • hair dryer
  • curling tongs
  • setting gel
  • water spray
  • grips

S Shaped Finger Waves-

  1. Start with thoroughly brushing the hair through and middle parting the hair.
  2. Then using the water spray thoroughly spray the hair all over and using the comb brush through the hair. Then apply a small amount of gel to the hair and comb through.
  3. Starting from the top brush the hair away from the front with a comb, then place you finger on the hair where the wave will go.
  4. Then with your finger firmly down comb the hair the opposite wave, keep combing in the direction until all the hair has gone that way.
  5. Then place a large clip where the wave is for it to stay in position.
  6. Then using your comb brush the hair in the opposite direction, keep doing this process all the way down the hair.

Pinched Finger Waves-

  1. Start with thoroughly brushing the hair through on the other side.
  2. Then using the water spray thoroughly spray the hair all over and using the comb brush through the hair. Then apply a small amount of gel to the hair and comb through.
  3. Start at the top of the hair and comb away from the hair line, then place your finger down at the end of it and one on the top where it starts and place your comb at the bottom where your finger is and comb up on a slant and punch your two fingers together to make the wave lift.
  4. Then using the large grip I placed it where the first wave is.
  5. You then repeat this down the hair combing the next one up and pinching your fingers together to create a new wave.
  6. Once one side of the head was done I wanted to speed up the drying process so I used a hairdryer and then took the clips out.

Curling tong finger waves-

  1. Firstly I started with brushing the hair through thoroughly.
  2. I had my tongs pre heated, I section the first part with my pin tail comb, the section was around a CM wide I combed it up and clamped my curlers at the end and rolled into the head so it formed a barrel curl.
  3. I then opened the clamp and slid the curlers out and used the clip to hold the curl in place.
  4. I then sectioned the next part off and did the same and carried on all the way down the side of the head and using my clips to hold them in place.
  5. Once the hair had completely cooled I took all the clips out and they stayed neatly in position.
  6. Using my brush, I brush the hair with control and letting the curls fall naturally.
  7. It sat nicely in waves which I then used my comb to direction the waves. I used the clips to sit in each dip of the finger wave.
  8. I then hair sprayed it all in place and used my pin tail comb to smooth the waves
  9. I then tucked the end of the hair back and gripped the end of it up.

Final Evaluation

Overall I can honestly say I struggled with creating the fingers waves. It is a very hard style to create as you have to have direction and good placement of the hair. I felt the hair wasn't going over as far as I wanted it to and staying in the place to create the perfect finger wave. The wet gel finger waves were much harder than the curling tongs waves. With the dry waves the heat was directing it for you so you just had to manipulate it into place with the comb and spray afterwards. Finger waves is a very useful skill to have and I feel its something I want to get better at and with practice I could get the hang of it. Depending on the style that is wanting to be created you can create the waves in many different ways and will eventually have to do a full head not just the front. I did enjoy trying to create the waves as stressful as it was however its a skill I will pick up with practice.

Health and Safety:

  • Do not run in the studio
  • be careful of trailing cables
  • be caution of hot equipment such as curling tongs
  • keep work station tidy
  • keep bags and coats away
  • be careful with the use of water and spillage
