Project Evaluation

Overall I feel the beauty and the brand unit had really given me independence in my own work and development. The unit was a slow start when having to choose a brand and think and develop six different looks and ideas. The unit has definitely helped with my technical skills and the challenge of bringing together a photo shoot and collaborating with other people. Time management is essential and allowing yourself to be organised to complete all six looks.

Over the course of the unit I researched my chosen brand Chanel in depth and looked into spring/summer 2016 and past trends of Chanel and other designer. This has definitely widened my knowledge of current and past trends and the also noticing styles and make-up coming back into fashion again. This has definitely given me an insight into the fashion industry and what it takes to create a final piece. I was anxious about having to shoot six looks and I can honestly say it was not easy as bringing together a look as a whole and finding models is hard. However looking at my final image I can see the reflection of my hard work, time, planning, and development and in depth studying of the fashion house Chanel. I have looked into current and past trends and feel this really reflects into my final images how I came to the conclusion of each individual look.

When starting this unit I was very excited to be doing a fashion and beauty unit as I want to go into fashion and editorial make-up however have really enjoyed creating the advertisement as a whole and basing a certain look on a make-up collection and reflecting the products in the look. This unit has definitely had its ups and down and have had a real struggle as a designer bringing together a whole look and think of the technical side and also the styling and sourcing suitable models for the look.

I have really enjoyed this unit and think it had developed me as a designer and also following the guideline of a brand and season. Overall I’m very happy with the outcome of my final images and think its portrayed through my sketch blog journey.

Brand evaluation

My chosen brand for the unit beauty and the brand is Chanel. I decided to go with Chanel because it has a very well-known fashion house and has decades of history within itself from when Coco Chanel was first born. I feel Chanel is a well suited brand for me as the style can either be edgy and bright or super chic and classic. I love the classic look of Chanel which is featured continuously throughout every season’s show of which is the womens tweed suit and iconic 2.55 hand bag. Karl Lagerfeld is currently head designer and creative director of the fashion house Chanel and joined the brand in 1983. Karl Lagerfeld has driven success and promotion within the company and has kept Coco Chanels classic look but brought new prints and patterns into the collection creating diversity and reaching out to a wider target audience.

During the course of the unit I have thoroughly enjoy researching Chanel past and how Gabrielle started off with a small hat boutique in Paris and has built up her brand to worldwide success selling make-up, clothing, jewellery and perfumes etc. One of Chanels most iconic product is Chanel No.5 which was created in 1921 and still features the same black and white packaging. Chanel No.5 has been advertised with stars such as Marilyn Monroe to now currently super model Giselle Bundchen and is one of the bestselling perfumes in the world. Coco Mademoiselle Chanel was released in 2001 and was aimed for a younger target audience as Chanel now a days is targeting the classy, independent, younger members of the elite.

This Year Chanel spring/summer ready-to wear collection was inspired by travel and was featured in an airport. The line featured combinations of colours, the main being blue, red and white. The spring make-up collection L.A. Sunrise features flashes of purple, teal and green capture the city’s carefree spirit, while a dreamy spectrum of pink, coral and raspberry shades evoke the California morning skies. For each of my shoots I fully considered Chanel styling and the colours of the spring make-up collection to be feature in each of my look while gathering inspiration and trends from other designers.

Chanel as a brand invests a lot of money into promoting itself and keeping up to date and forward with fashion. Chanel implements a series of advertisements on TV, billboards, magazine spreads and social media while featuring 5-6 fashion shows a year for their collections. Chanel has a timeless classic look and has the position in the fashion industry to be able to create any look and be praised for it. Chanel price point is on the higher end for clothing and accessories as a 2.55 iconic bag is around £4000 however when it comes to the make-up line so products can be good valued for Chanel a high end brand. The products are good quality and you get what you pay for when it comes to the brand as you are also paying for the name.

I feel I have thoroughly researched Chanels history, style, products, identity and feel my research, inspiration and development has projected itself in my final images as I have taken all aspects into consideration. Beauty and the brand has really developed my research skills and helped me consider Chanel as a brand and my development over the past weeks and coming to the initial conclusion of my final images and how Chanel influenced my looks. I feel this unit has helped me be very independent and I have thoroughly enjoyed the unit and I have no regrets choosing Chanel.

EDIT ONE

EDIT THREE

For my Editorial I firstly down the 200 images to around 10 of my favourites. From there I study each image dead to toe to make sure i'm happy with it before I select it for the finals. Finally I got my images down to my three best which I look the models were in a good position, there expressions were good, good stance, nice angle, good framing and the hair and clothing/accessories were all on point and in position. My first chosen one was the full body portrait shot, the second was a close up portrait shot and the third was a landscape mid body shot. I chose these all for different reasons and for the overall quality of the images and all the aspects I mentioned above. In first edit I liked how one mode had eye contact and one was gazing out, both stances were good and I liked how the sun came down strong and shadowed over in certain areas and I like the one model lent up against the tree. My second image is my complete favourite as I love everything about the image and think its a really beautiful edgy shot. The third image I really like because its slightly different and its landscape which Chanels cruise editorials are all landscape images. I didn't know it the tree was too powering in the image or if it suited well and was more of a leaning prop for the models.

I then booked a 1-1 with Kat to show her my final editorial images and she was pleased with the outcome of the shoot as she knew  had be struggling with planning this shoot and getting it together. Kat said in the first image she wasn't to keen on the right models leg position as it looks a little awkward however really liked the second and third image and her feedback was positive to them both. I asked about the tree as I was concerned if the tree in the middle was too much and she though it was not and its a very good image. For my submission I have decided to go with Edit two and three as I feel these are my best and strongest images.

Catwalk edits and feedback

LOOK ONE

EDIT ONE

 EDIT TWO

Above these are my two favourites, I decided to edit two completely different styled images to see what I liked best and the sort of thing I wanted to submit. I really like the top image because its in the style like she is on the runway walking towards to camera and this was the exact effect I wanted with the wind blowing through the hair. The second one I like because I like the close framing to the face and how she is looking directly into the camera. After my edits I booked a 1-1 with Kat and showed her my two favourite images from catwalk look one. Kat agreed with me that the top image is stronger and her feedback was positive with the look and the styling and how I wanted it to be presented. My chosen image will be the top one.

LOOK TWO

EDIT ONE

My first edit was this off the shoulder look, I really like this one because I like the position she is stood in, her good eye contact with the camera and the strong look in her face. This images looks like she is on a catwalk and has turned around and a photographer has captured a shot of her.

 EDIT TWO

This is image is a little more casual and set out like a backstage/behind the scenes shot. I really like the strong position she is in and how one leg is posed in front of the other giving a sexy edge to it. I also like how she is casually gazing into the camera and its more of a back stage snap shot.

EDIT THREE

This is the final image I edited and I like the angle she is in. This position really allows you to focus of the garments, bags and the strong bright make-up. I think this image is very strong and one of favourites. I like how she is slightly lent to one side and is looking down to the ground and the structure of her jaw.

In the same 1-1 with Kat I showed her my second catwalk look and told her I couldn't choose one and didn't know which one to go for. Kat thought the two strongest out of the three was the first and third image which I 100% agree with as they are my favourite. I didn't know which one to submit and Kat informed me I can submit both if I wanted to. I decided I want to submit both and put them on a double page spread together so it works out perfect,

Steps

  1. First step was cleaning the face with toning water just to make sure the model face is make-up free. I then used a moisturiser all over the face and the neck. I then applied a primer to the face all over with my foundation brush, the skin is now ready for the application of make-up.
  2. I then applied the Amarni foundation all over the face for a light coverage. I used a darker shade of foundation and a lighter one to contour the face. This is to be able to give a light contour and sculpting of the face with the foundation. I applied the dark on the top of the forehead, cheekbones, chin, just under the jaw line and tip of the nose and side, I then applied the light on the centre of the forehead, under the eyes, below the cheekbones, centre of chin, eyelids and centre of the nose. I then placed a small amount of the make-up blend and squeezed  brush, this helps to blend the foundation into each other and give a slight glow to the skin. Using the brush I blended it all in and worked it onto the ears and down the neck.
  3. Next was setting the foundation and highlighting certain areas with the powder. I applied the white powder first under the eyes, centre of the forehead and under the cheekbones and the over I applied the banana powder. I then used my large powder brush to blend it in. I wanted a glowy look so I applied only a small of powder so it set the make-up however wasn't completely matte.
  4. I then used the sculpting powder and used my brush to define the cheekbones. I then went over the cheeks with the Illamasqua blusher which is a mix of a dark pink and bright pink to give warmth to the skin. Lastly on the skin was highlighting it which I used a fan brush and highlighted the center of the forehead, under brow, tops of cheekbones, down nose, cupids bows and chin.
  5. I then started on the eyes where I created a blue  winged eyeliner and created a flick, I then drew another line with the blue liner in the crease of the eye and elongating out I then gave the lashes one coat of black mascara.
  6. Next was the brows which I filled in a defined with a brown pomade and brush.
  7. I then lined the lips with a red liner and filled them in with an ornage lipstick and used my brush to blend the colours in.

HAIR

Equipment:

Steps

  1.  Firstly I started with brushing the hair through. I then used the comb to create a middle parting.
  2. I then pre heated the straighteners and completely straightened the hair.
  3. I then back combed the top and sleeked it down and sprayed the hair in place.

  5. I then started on the eyes where I created a black winged eyeliner and created a flick, I then drew another line with the blue liner in the crease of the eye and elongating out I then gave the lashes one coat of black mascara.
  6. Next was the brows which I filled in a defined with a brown pomade and brush.
  7. I then lined the lips with a red liner and filled them in with a dark berry pink lipstick and used my brush to blend the colours in.

Some Images from the Shoot

Mood boards

How the shoot went-

I had a very small time frame to shoot the look in because one of the models had work before so couldn't shoot any earlier and had an appointment after so had to leave so I was given real task. My first model came to my house at 12.30pm and I started with her makeup and then did the hair, she got dressed in the outfit prepared for her. I then packed all my make-up and hair kit and took the clothes and me and model one had to dive to the other models house because she finished work at 2pm and I needed to get on with the makeup straight away. We got to the second models house at 2.15pm as she had just got home and then I did her hair and makeup, this took me to 3.15pm however I was meant to meet my photographer at 3pm at Lydiard so we were behind schedule. We then arrived to Lydiard park at around 3.25pm and one of the models had to leave for 4.15pm so I had just under and hour to shoot. The sun kept appearing an disappearing and the air was bitter cold so the model were a bit cold as it wasn't the warmest day. We then found a good spot in front of trees and positioned the models, I brought the mood boards with me on the day so I could show them the look I was going for and the sort of look I wanted and how to position. After around 45 minutes of shooting it was a wrap and we had finished. All together I had just over 200 photos and the following day the photographer emailed them over to me.

Did any problems occur on the day or during the shoot?-

The first problem of the day was when I woke up and looked at the weather forecast it was saying it was going to rain all Saturday. I couldn't rearrange because my photographer works full time and both the other models work and go to college so its hard to get them all available at the same time. I woke up Saturday morning and the sky was completely grey and I was getting very worried, I started ringing around to find inside locations just in case it started to rain. Finally the De'vere hotel agree I could shoot in there lobby/lounge area as I have been there before and inside is beautiful.. I was so happy I had arranged a back up plan just in case. When my model got to mine at 12.30pm the sky started clearly up and the sun came out which made me so happy.. fingers crossed it wouldn't rain when we get there. My second problem was my time frame as my model finished work at 2pm however needed to leave by 4.15 so it gave me 2 hours to do her hair and makeup, dress, get to the location and shoot which was a challenge accepted and completed. When we arrived the sun would appear but dissappear and it was still cold outside so I felt bad for the models however shooting was only 45 minutes and then we jumped in the car and blasted the heating.

Am I happy with the overall look-

After the hardest shoot of my life and gathering together four us to collaborate and my crazy time frame I'm super happy with the look. I love both the looks and I adore both there outfits and feel they are 100% chanel inspired and couldn't be happier to say I styled this shoot. I was able to go on a big shopping spree and pick out outfits and possible looks to come to the conclusion of both Chanel spring/summer outfit. I took the colours used this year into consideration and I styled them in skirts and jackets creating that iconic look, I then layered the model with a cardigan and both bags like in the 2016 show. My theme and story was a summers walk in the woodlands in the South of France which reflects in my chosen location and inspired by the Cruise Editorial 2016. Looking at the images I am so proud of what I created and cant' believe soley put together the whole look, ideas, inspiration and making it look professional and Chanel spring/summer. I couldn't be happier with the positive outcome of the shoot after I thought all wasn't going to go to plan.

How do I feel about the images-

I think the images came I really good. I normally do the photography myself however because it's on location I decided to collaborate with a photographer to get the best images I can for the editorial. Before the shoot I sent her over the images I like and the mood board just so she got an idea of what I wanted created on the day and the look I was going for. I was spot on and I got a selection of 200 images to choose from and to finalise it to 2 final images for submission.

Am I going to re-shoot-

I am really happy with everything I have done including both make-up and hair designs, both dark haired tall model, my location and concept and overall how the images came out. I will not be needing to re-shoot as I'm pleased with the shoot and the outcome of the images.
